Learn About Diamond Certification

Every diamond sold by The Diamond Channel comes with an independent certification from a trusted gemological laboratory. Here's what that means for you, and why it matters.

What Is a Diamond Certificate?

A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is an independent, unbiased assessment of a diamond's quality, issued by a certified gemological laboratory. It documents the diamond's exact characteristics — the 4Cs — so you know precisely what you're buying before you spend a dollar.

The 4Cs Explained

💎

Cut

The most important of the 4Cs. Cut refers to how well the diamond's facets interact with light — not the shape, but the precision of the angles and proportions. A well-cut diamond will sparkle brilliantly even if its color or clarity grades are lower. Grades range from Excellent to Poor.

🎨

Color

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds (D–F) are the rarest and most valuable. Near-colorless diamonds (G–J) offer excellent value — the color difference is virtually invisible to the naked eye, especially when set in white gold or platinum.

🔍

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. The scale runs from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. We recommend VS2 or SI1 clarity for the best balance of quality and value — eye-clean diamonds that look flawless in person.

Carat Weight

Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but carat weight alone doesn't determine a diamond's beauty — a well-cut 0.90ct diamond can appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly cut 1.00ct stone.

Our Certification Partners

Depending on the piece, your diamond will be certified by one of the following trusted laboratories. Each is recognized worldwide for accuracy, integrity, and reliability.

DIS — Diamond Services

diamondservicesusa.com

Founded in 2012, Diamond Services (DIS) is the industry leader in diamond identification technologies, synthetic diamond documentation, and finished jewelry grading. DIS reports are recognized worldwide among gemologists, suppliers, and retailers for their reliability and superior accuracy.

What sets DIS apart is their pioneering use of advanced technology to screen lab-grown diamonds, natural diamonds, and non-diamond stones — including the ability to distinguish whether a lab-grown diamond was created through the HPHT or CVD process. No single tabletop machine can guarantee 100% accuracy; DIS uses proprietary multi-technology screening to ensure every result is precise.

Each DIS-certified piece comes with a unique Digital Certificate — an animated, interactive online certificate accessible via QR code. Customers can view it on their phone, share it with others, and connect directly to our store. It's a modern, transparent way to verify exactly what you purchased.

The world's leading grading lab for lab-grown diamonds. IGI is widely recognized and trusted by major retailers worldwide, and is the standard certification for lab-created stones. Select lab-grown diamonds in our collection carry IGI certification.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They are real diamonds — not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. The only difference is their origin: one formed underground over billions of years, the other created in a controlled laboratory environment in weeks.

Lab-grown diamonds offer the same brilliance and beauty as natural diamonds, typically at 60–80% less cost. Both types are independently certified and carry the same grading standards.
